Introduction to Journalism

by Dianne Smith

FULL YEAR COURSE MATERIALS

Introduction to Journalism is a basic entrance to the world of journalistic writing and design which can be used with any journalism textbook, or it can serve as a guide to using printed and online periodicals as a study of modern-day journalism. Class activities and individual and group projects will focus the students toward communicating with a mass audience through newspapers, television and other media. Students will learn approaches to factual and persuasive writing in a variety of formats, as well as visual approaches to information presentation. The book offers a basic but expandable approach to the teaching of journalism, providing a level of confidence for beginning teachers and a starting point for more experienced teachers. A pacing guide and daily lesson plans offer a structured approach, with the addition of "wild card" days where reteaching, practicing skills, viewing related movies or discussing related printed materials, or the teacher's choice of enhancement activities are options for the class.

This thorough curriculum could guide even someone totally unfamiliar with journalism to plan, teach and evaluate a worthwhile course; evaluate students fairly and significantly; and learn from the experience. The amount of material is overwhelming but any teacher working with the material could choose what to use, what to adapt to local circumstances and what could realistically be taken on by both teacher and students. The book does what it promises to do. It could prove vital to preserving journalism in secondary schools as they go wanting for experienced teachers in the field. The writing is clear, the information is current, I'm not aware of any book as exhaustive. --Wayne Brasler, Journalism Department Chair, University of Chicago Lab School; Author of The Newspaper Guide Book, published by the National Scholastic Press Association.

Let me say that I absolutely LOVE the materials and only wish I had had them for the begining of this year.  FANTASTIC support, excellent resources, and completely up to date for all of the latest content standards and essential knowledge and skills.  Dianne Smith is fantastic and what an excellent teacher.  I shall use this resource and these materials for a long long time. -- Thomas J. Kaup CJE, NBPTS, Alice Buffett Magnet Middle School
